Single girl children families more in Kerala

Kerala has topped in the number of families having single girl children when state has bagged 50 per cent of the 1,062 post-graduate scholarships of University Grants Commission.


The UGC has introduced the scheme last month for promoting education among girl children besides encouraging small families.


Kerala children numbering 544 were selected for the scholarship under which each student would get a stipend of Rs2,000 a month. Besides no tuition fee would be charged from them during the two-year post graduation course. 
Tamil Nadu came second with 182 scholarships, according to Dr V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Acting Vice-Chairman, UGC.
