Matt offers houses to victims

PNS | Thiruvananthapuram

The Mata Amritanandamayi Matt has offered to build houses as part of a rehabilitation scheme for Endosulfan victims in Kasaragod district provided the Kerala Government allots suitable land for the purpose. Matt vice-chairman Swami Amritaswarupanandapuri said this was necessary as the soil of the area where the victims presently stayed could be contaminated due to the Endosulfan use.

The implementation of the full rehabilitation package for 250-300 families would be based on the cooperation of the State Government. The Matt would also set up an Abhaya Kendram (refuge centre) for the rehabilitation of children, who were suffering from the ill-effects of the pesticide.

Financial aid in the form of monthly pension would be provided to families of the victims as many parents were not able to earn their livelihood since they had to look after the affected children. The pension amount would be decided later, he said.
