Restrict the age to become Nuns as 18- Women’s Commission

via HK published on June 3, 2008

Thiruvananthapuram: KeralaState
Women’s Commission directed Kerala Government to restrict the minimum age of
girls who want to become nuns as 18. This age restriction is recommended to
prevent forceful admission of minor girls to convents to become Nuns.

This direction is based on
various complaints filed with Commission exposing the abuse of girls who are
forced to into various convents to take up their whole life as Nuns.

Though it is believed that choosing the path
as a Nun is a Voluntary act, In Kerala majority of the girls from poor family
are forced into it by pressure from their family and church.

Commission Chair Person D
Sreedevi, told that Action must be taken against those parents who send their
daughters below 18 years of old as Nuns. There should also be a system to
rehabilitate those who wish to continue a normal life back in the society.

Recruiting agents of various
Church sects are also active to lure girls from poor Christian family to
brainwash them to take up this cause. After the media reports of Sex Scandals related
with church and murder of Nuns in Kerala, only very few families are now coming
forward to send their girls to become nuns.
