Rape of minor following ‘Arab marriage’ in Kozhikode

published on August 25, 2013
A shocking case of rape of a minor, in the form of ‘Arab marriage’ has surfaced from Kozhikode. According to reports, the ‘marriage’ was solemnized with the consent of the authorities of an orphanage, who forced the victim, a minor, into ‘marrying’ the Arab.
According to the girl, a Malappuram native, “the Arab and his friends raped her, following the ‘marriage'”, with the ‘husband’ taking her to various places. A complaint has been lodged at the Child Welfare Council by the girl and her mother, following which police have registered a case.
Sources have stated that Jazi Mohammed Abdul Kareem of UAE paid a visit to Kozhikode in June when he expressed the desire to marry. The orphanage authorities are said to have arranged for a marriage immediately, after the Arab said that he had to return to his native land in a month’s time.
After the wedding was solemnized, the Arab is said to have taken the girl to various places including Kumarakom. They are said to have stayed in plush hotels, where the girl was allegedly subjected to rape by several men.
According to the girl, “the orphanage authorities claimed that there will be financial gains for the orphanage, if the marriage is solemnized.” The victims has also alleged that authorities “threatened to throw her out of the orphanage, if she refused to give consent for the marriage.”
The victim said that authorities brought her back to the orphanage after the Arab left for the gulf, stating that “she could go with him, when he returned to Kerala”. The man, however, called her over phone and announced his divorce. It was at this juncture that the girl realized she had been connived.
The orphanage authorities have also washed their hands off the incident. They now claim that the girl’s family is responsible for the marriage. It has also been reported that the Arab’s mother is a native of Kozhikode, which was the chief reason for the family to give consent for the wedding.
