BJP expresses concern over Love Jihad in Kerala

Pioneer News Service | New Delhi

The BJP on Friday expressed concern over conversion of Hindu and Christian girls to Islam in Kerala after marriage and said jihadi groups from across the border were misguiding young men and women to resort to this step.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Balbir Punj (BJP) referred to a recent Kerala High Court observation on this issue and direction to the State Government to enact a law to stop such “fraudulent conversions”.

Punj said the court also noted some states had already enforced such a law to check such conversions.

He alleged that an organisation called ‘Islamic Popular Front’ was promoting these conversions through so-called “Love Jihad” and “Romeo Jihad” with cross-border support.

Stating that 2,008 women from Hindu and Christian communities had converted to Islam in Kerala, Punj said most of these conversions took place in four Muslim dominated districts of the State. Some of his party colleagues backed Punj’s assertion and demanded a reply from the Government while some members from the treasury benches objected to the BJP raising this issue.
