If Kerala listened to Valsan Thilankeri’s warnings then, Many lives could have been saved

The probe into the May 4 murder of rebel Marxist leader TP Chandrasekharan of Onchiyam, Kozhikode seemed to be nearing its conclusion on Thursday with the police arresting three more members of the killer gang including its leader “Kodi” Suni and senior CPM functionary PK Kunhananthan, one of the main conspirators, reportedly expressing readiness to surrender.

With the arrest of prime accused “Kodi” Suni (real name PK Sunil Kumar, hailing from Chokli, Kannur) and his aides “Kirmani” Manoj and Muhammad Shafi, six of the total seven members of the gang of killers who hacked Chandrasekharan to death had been nabbed. Hit-men TK Rajeesh, Sijith and Anoop had already been arrested. The killer remaining to be held is Shijith.

They said Suni and Shafi had hacked Chandrasekharan. Suni was the leader of the seven-member gang of hoodlums who had hacked the rebel leader to death.

Sources said that Suni and Manoj, one of the prime accused in the case of murdering RSS leader Valsaraj Kurup, lawyer of Thalassery Bar, in 2007, told the police that they had murdered Chandrasekharan on the instruction of the CPI(M) and the instruction was conveyed to them by Kunhananthan.

Kodi Suni and his two aides were taken into custody in an adventurous action by officials of the SIT in the wee hours of Thursday from a make-shift tent put up in the jungle at Muzhakkunnu in the eastern part of Kannur district on the basis of information passed on by the police’s Intelligence wing.

As a 12-member police team surrounded the killers’ hideout in the jungle by Wednesday midnight, Suni jumped out pointing a revolver at the officials. Another of the gang tried to face the police with a dagger. However, the police team managed to overpower the hoodlums, sources said.

The police have seized the revolver and dagger from the killers. Three persons, who had helped them to live in hiding, had also been held.  The killers’ aides, Karayi Sreejith, Rajesh and Sudheesh, were said to be CPI(M) workers or sympathizers. They told the police that Suni and the others had been living in the hideout for the past 20 days.

Corroborating the statement of Rajeesh, the killer arrested earlier, Suni and Manoj also told the SIT that the conspiracy to murder Chandrasekharan was hatched at the place of Kunhananthan, secretary of the area committee of the CPI(M) in Panur, Kannur. However, there are reports that more senior CPI(M) leaders were involved in the conspiracy.
