THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Caught in an unprecedented crisis unheard in its history, the state leaders of the CPM are wracking their brains to come out unhurt of the graft charges against its state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.

If the speech of CPM politburo member and Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Wednesday alleging that the UPA Government was trying to trap the party state secretary using the CBI is an indication, the party will try to fight it out politically.

Kodiyeri told CPM workers who had assembled to constitute a reception committee for Pinarayi Vijayan’s Nav Kerala Yatra at AKG Centre that the state secretary was implicated in the SNC Lavalin case as retaliatory tactics by the UPA Government for the Left withdrawing support to the Government.

He quoted as example cases against Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawati to prove his point.

“Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh are planning to weaken the CPM by misusing the CBI. They need not come to Kerala with that agenda. Cases are not new to Pinarayi Vijayan.

We will fight this case politically,” said Kodiyeri.

Sources close to Pinarayi Vijayan told to The New Indian Express that the secretary won’t step down in the name of a politically motivated case. It is learnt that the Pinarayi camp is planning to try a VS trick to save its supremo.

As a first step, each and every district committee will pass resolutions condemning the CBI and the UPA Government.

The district units will reiterate their loyalty to Pinarayi Vijayan through those resolutions.

When V S Achuthanandan was denied candidature, nine district committees had passed resolutions demanding a correction in the decision.

The strategy is to pressurise the CPM central leadership against any move to shift Pinarayi from the secretary’s post.

The state committee would also pass a resolution, if needed. But it won’t be easy as V S Achuthanandan and the Central leadership may not favour that idea.

What has inspired the Pinarayi camp is the strategy adopted by the Knanaya Catholic Church in protecting the two priests and a nun in the Sr Abhaya murder case.

A page one report by CPM mouthpiece ‘Desabhimani’ on January 13 was the first step in this regard. The report questioned the integrity of the CBI by citing two cases in which corrupt CBI officers had been held.
