KOZHIKODE: Terrorists associated with the Indian Mujahideen (IM) have experimented with all kinds of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) since the inception of the terror outfit a few years ago - be it the pipe bomb, the boat bomb (‘U’-shaped bomb) or the flowerpot bomb.

The pipe bomb used in Kerala was the first to be developed by Edappathodi Sainudheen alias Abdul Sattar, who perfected the art of bomb-making which he learned from terrorist Imam Ali. Pipe bombs are made by filling a PVC pipe with gelatine and iron balls. A transistor, a capacitor and a resistor are used to make the timer device.

Around 100 pipe bombs were made by Sainudheen and his accomplices, which were stored under the Koomankallu bridge in Malappuram.Later, similar bombs were recovered from Narath in Kannur in huge quantities.

The boat bomb is the speciality of Riyaz Bhatkal, co-founder of IM. The bombs used in Delhi on September 13, 2008, and those that exploded in Ahmedabad on July 25, 2008, were concealed in boatshaped wooden boxes. Ammonium nitrate mixture was used for making these bombs. However, the 19 bombs planted in Surat the same day had failed to go off.

Sainudheen told interrogators that those bombs failed to explode as the microchips were fixed by his son Sharafudheen, who was a new to the ‘business’.

The police had recovered the materials used for making the pipe bombs, from Vatva in Gujarat.

The bombs used for the Bangalore blasts had the shape of flowerpots. In those bombs also ammonium nitrate was used, with an outer covering of concrete. They were made at a hideout of Thadiyantavide Nazeer at Suntikuppa in Veerajpet.
