Stop eating beef to cut emissions, says Jairam

Stop eating beef to cut emissions: That was the suggestion mooted out by Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh to major beef-consuming nations on Thursday from a UN forum.

“You may laugh at it. But the solution to cut emissions is to stop eating beef. It leads to emission of methane (CH4) that is 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide. But the best thing for us, India, is we are not a beef-eating nation,” he said, while speaking after the release of the United Nation’s Population Fund’s (UNFPA) report: State of World Population 2009 — Facing A Changing World: Women, Population and Climate.

Ramesh’s suggestion comes amid ever-growing concerns worldwide over livestock methane adding to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and countries like Germany and Australia discouraging its consumption.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, livestock produces 18 per cent of the total GHG emissions, which is even more than the transportation sector.

The simple reasoning: Less consumption of beef means its less production. The cow contributes to GHG emissions by way of producing methane in burps and dung, mostly due to the soyabean and corn in livestock. However, according to various researches, the bigger issue is that the around one billion cattle in the world need 17 times as much land, 26 times water, 20 times fossil fuels, and 6 times as many chemicals. In fact, producing a kilogram of beef takes up seven times more farmland than that needed vis-à-vis chicken.

The United States, which is yet to make a commitment on emission reductions despite being the biggest emitter, leads the pack of the highest beef consumers in the world. According to the statistics of the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) and US Dept of Agriculture (USDA), beef consumption in the US in 2009 stood at 12,554 million tonnes (current working estimate — CWE), which is nearly 25 per cent more than what the European Union nations consumed.

Intriguingly, though Ramesh may have put forth his advise, India’s own livestock is pegged at a whopping over 48 crore, arguably the largest in the world. Researches by scientists at the Ahmedabad-based Space Application Centre have shown that together the livestock emits nearly 12 million tonnes of methane annually.

Moreover, a surprising fact is that Indians consume more beef than their counterparts across the borders. FAS/USDA data for the year 2009 pegs the consumption of beef by India at 1,875 MT, CWE. Pakistan on the other hand consumed 1,155 MT, CWE. India’s larger population could be a factor, observers said. According to different researches, reducing beef and pork intake would create a new carbon sink, as vegetation would thrive on unused farmland. Millions of tonnes of methane would be saved every year due to reduced farm emissions.

The simple reason

Less consumption of beef means its less production. Cow contributes to GHG emissions by producing methane in burps and dung, mostly due to soyabean and corn in livestock. However, according to various researches, the bigger issue is that around 1 billion cattle in the world need 17 times as much land, 26 times water, 20 times fossil fuels, and 6 times as many chemicals. In fact, producing one kg beef takes seven times more farmland than that needed vis-a-vis chicken.

Beef eating
Cow is considered as next to Holy Mother in Hindu tradition.Cow eating is introduced by desert Religions which does not have a clear picture about relationship between the Nature and humanbeings. But in Hindu Religion very clearly explained the holy relationship between the Nature and Humaneings.Hindu religion very strongly declare that shows pity on all creatures.Among all these creatures we are giving topmost considerations to Cow as a Holy Animal why because Cow has a Genious power to act as a Mother to others by providing HER AMRITH (COW MILK) which considered as the most Powerful and Good food to the World.By knowing this good thing a true Hindu will not come forward to eat Cows Flesh. We are not against to No-Veg, But as a real Hindu, by knowing this fact,at least try to avoid Beef. This desert religions followers are doing whatever they want. They dont have any basic knowledge about the Universe and its stability.Till the time they could not give any stable answer regarding the Origin and stability of The Universe. Now a days the modern science looking in to Hindu Religions doctorines to find an Answer to this Great Quiestion.
So I agree with Sri Ramadasan with full support .He wrote the right things to understand Hindu named Jandhus.

Say " FIRM NO " to Beef
Mr.Sunil, My intention is not to hurt non vegetarians in general. I am talking aginst beef eaters. A proud Hindu should say a FIRM "NO" to beef. That is the identity of a Hindu. A beef eater can never become a proud Hindu. All Hindus should keep away from beef. I know that there are many who rush to Anthrumans hotel in the evening for Porotta and beef. That is a tragic scene found only in Daivathinte Swantam Nadu.
Dear Sunil , Do not mix up beef with Mutton and Fish.
Boycott hotels where beef is served.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THERE IS NO PROPER STRICT LAW IN INDIA !

INDIAN POLITICIANS ARE NOT INTERSTED TO AMEND THE OUTDATED LAWS AND CRIMINALS ESPECIALLY FOREIGN SUPPORTED TERRORISTS ARE NOT WORRIED ABOUT INDIAN LAWS IF CAUGHT WHILE EXECUTING THEIR MISSION IN INDIA. INDIA IS A SOFT TARGET FOR TERRORISTS BECAUSE IT'S SYSTEM AND OUTDATED LAWS ARE VERY MUCH WEAK TO DEAL WITH THEM.

NOT VEGETARIAN CITIZENS ARE ALSO LAW ABIDING, RESPONSIBLE AND READY TO SACRIFICE THEIR LIFE FOR THE NATION.

DON'T MAKE IT AS AN ISSUE OF VEGETARIANS AND NON VEGETARIANS, (EATING BEEF IS TO BE DISCOURAGED BY AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS)BUT WHEN YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT VEGETARIANS ONLY... IT IS DIRECTING TO ALL NON VEGETARIANS IE; THOSE ARE CONSUMING SEA FOODS, CHICKEN, EGGS ETC. WE CAN NOT AGREE WITH YOU MR. RAMADASAN .. .WE ARE ALSO PROUD HINDUS AND RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS.

not right kind of food
I fully agree with Sri Ramadasan. Beef eaters are criminals in nature. Very violent in their actions. Muslims will never talk peacefully, violent in actions , rude in behaviour and attitude. This is also evident in history that sons killed fathers / mothers , fathers killed sons and so on .This is all beacuse of their eating habits. 90% muslims are suffering from some decease either dental, skin or psychological. It is the time to ban beef eating in india.

The root cause of lawlessness- beef eating
Beef eating not at all good for human health.Beef eaters are violent in nature, law brekers and irresponsible citizens. We should study the harmful effects of beef human psyche.90% of undertrials, criminals and terrorists are beef eaters. Inhuman attitude and rude behaviour is common among beef eaters where as vegetarins are law abiding, pious and responsible towards the nation and fellow beings.
The Bible is not my book, and Christianity is not my religion. I could never give assent to the long, complicated statements of Christian dogma.
