Fla. church plans to burn Qurans on 9/11 anniversary

(RNS) A Florida church with "Islam is of the devil" signs in its front lawn plans to host an "International Burn A Quran Day," on the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks this year.

The Dove World Outreach Center, a non-denominational church in Gainesville, has marked the date in previous years with protests against Islam. The church holds protests on other issues, such as homosexuality, same-sex marriage, and abortion.

Pastor Terry Jones said members of the church plan to be at the Gainesville City Hall on Aug. 2 to protest the election of the city's openly gay mayor. Church-state groups had previously accused the church of illegal politicking for its "No Homo Mayor" signs.

Jones, who is also the author of a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," said protests are key to the mission of his church.

"We feel, as Christians, one of our jobs is to warn," said Jones. The goal of these and other protests are to give Muslims an opportunity to convert, he said.

In response to the posting of the event on Facebook a little more than a week ago, Jones said that people have been mailing Qurans to the church to burn. He said organizers got the idea, in part, from another Facebook page, called "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day."

Sept. 11 will fall during the Eid al-Fitr holiday this year, when Muslims mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Local Muslims are planning to use the feast as an opportunity to share Islamic traditions and Qurans with the church members and the wider community.

Sarge 28/07/2010 02:02:32	US rocks !!!! Looks like the US and Europe is now going for an all-out war with the Jehadis. In Europe new laws are getting formed which makes it tough for Jehadi mentality to be practised. In US they are making fun of every single Jehadi custom (burqah, picture of the prophet cannot be drawn etc.). In US they had a competition in face book for painting the prophet !! But in these countries there is a strong law enforcement which ensures that Jehadis cannot enforce the Shariat. In India, we have got imbecile politicians who will support the Jehadis and leave their country men to suffer. Unless people in India can think about national security, and cultural security, totally ignoring the politicians, nothing will work in India.
K.Venugopal 27/07/2010 09:46:48	Calling a spade a bloody spade. To call a spade a spade is the right thing but to call a spade a bloody spade is particularly righteous. I am reminded of a petition filed in the Calcutta High Court about 25 years ago to ban the Quran based on verses in the Quran which call for religious violence. The Calcutta High Court accepted the writ petition. But the Central government of Congress rushed its Law Minister to Calcutta to put pressure on the Court to dismiss the petition without any hearing, which the Court did. Subsequent to the dismissal of the petition a Hindu Mahasabha leader published 24 verses of the Quran which were mentioned in the petition as verses of religious intolerance, in poster form. The publishers of the poster were duly arrested by the Congress government to appease the Muslims but the Delhi Metropolitan Magistrate before whom the case came up discharged those arrested saying that indeed the verses mentioned in the poster were verses of religious hatred! Following the burkha ban in France, in the immediacy of which there were widespread protests in the Muslim world and call to Muslim women not to travel to France (though subdued, for the Muslims seem to be realizing that the world need not necessarily be run on the Shariat), a Mullah in Saudi Arabia has said that it is alright for Muslim women to travel to France and not observe burkha if that is what French law calls for! This is exactly what Sri Aurobindo predicted – the Muslim psyche would fall in line only when confronted by a mightier power display. I admire the guts of the Church in this case.
