90% of liquor consumers in Kerala are Hindus –Awaken Hindus

via HK Correspondent published on April 16, 2011

It is no secret that the LDF government and its budget heavily depended on Beverage Corporation and those in concerned department confide that salaries to state government employees are being paid every month from the income generated through Beverage Corporation. During the financial year 2010-2011 the Beverage Corporation’s sales stood at 6730.3 Crores which is 21% higher than previous year. From the sales, the Government got 5230 Crores as income. The daily sales shot up from 18 to 19 crores to 20.61 crores. During the last Onam the TV channels were competing to give running commentary on the sale proceeds at different Beverage Corporation Depots and Karunagapply emerged as the winner. Malayalees have the capacity now to celebrate with liquor on any occasion whether it is a religious festival or Cricket match. On the day of cricket semi final while India and Pakistan were playing, the sporty Malayalee consumed liquor worth rupees 21 Crores and expressed their support for the nation. What patriotism!! What a cricket loving people!! No one bothers to find out reason for more and more people queuing up at hospitals with different type of fever that are yet to be identified.

HK wish to share its concern since 90% of the regular liquor consumers are Hindus and among them 60% are of BPL category. There is acute shortage for labors in this area since many parts of Kollam district are notorious for sand excavation, soil excavation, and granite and bauxite quarries. The roads are crowded with tripper Lorries and JCBs moving intermittently. Sasthamcota Lake which is the largest fresh water lake in Kerala is drying up very fast. The minimum wage in the area is Rs.450.00 for an unskilled worker and this has attracted large number of labor force from Assam, Bengal and Tamil; Nadu. So, the reality is that any person willing to work can earn Rs.450.00 daily and being in BPL category he gets rice for Rs.2.00 per kilo against the existing price of Rs.37.00 for others and also enjoys other benefits of BPL category. Through LDF Government’s lavish appeasement policy, his wife shall be earning through the liberal loan schemes of Sthree Sakthi and the job guarantee scheme. All such surplus income without any guidance for saving flow to the liquor shops and Lottery Agents which helped the LDF Government to keep the treasuries opened all time unlike the UDF Government. In recent times, both NSS and SNDP have taken up this as a serious problem, but since the rank and file of these organizations never heeded to advices from leadership, the efforts shall not find any positive results. Every Hindu organization must take up this as a challenge and make sure that they spent some time to save this community from the stalemate they are in. These hard facts need to be cared since the ongoing conversions and mad political allegiance observed among the Hindus have relevance to these issues.
