BJP activist Bijith of Vadanappilly, who was a member of BMS, Thalikkulam, was stabbed to death at Chanthappura, Kodungallur, a politically sensitive area, on the night of Saturday-Sunday. The BJP alleged that the CPI(M) was behind the murder.

Bijith, who was a private bus worker, was the third BJP worker to be murdered in the last three months in the coastal region of Thrissur district. The BJP observed a dawn-to-dusk hartal on Sunday in Nattika and Kodungallur Assembly constituency areas protesting the killing. The Thriprayar area was exempted from the hartal as the Sree Ramaswami temple there was celebrating Ekadasi.

According to the police, Bijith was attacked by a group of assailants who had come in a car at about 00.30 hrs on Sunday at Chanthappura. He was taken to the hospital by a group of Sabarimala pilgrims who spotted him with injuries on the road.

The Chanthappura area had been under severe tension in the past many days and there had been some squabble the other day between CPI(M) and BJP workers over an issue of poster-destruction. Kodungallur had been tense for the past many months and the conflict had worsened after KU Biju, DYFI’s Kodungallur Block president and CPI(M) local committee member, was hacked to death on July 2.

BJP leaders alleged that the CPI(M) and the NDF were out to finish off into prominence in the region through planned attacks. They pointed out that three BJP-RSS workers had been hacked or stabbed to death by assailants from the CPI(M) or NDF exactly in the past three months in the coastal region of Thrissur district.

On Tuesday last, former Pavaratty RSS Mandalam Karayavah Vinod (Vinu-34), Arakkal house, Thirunelloor was hacked to death by a group at Kaithamukku, Padoor, Pavaratty on Tuesday.

The group of assailants had crashed a car in which they came against the motorcycle on which Vinu was coming to Kaithamukku. After the crash, Vinu tried to run away leaving the bike behind but the assailants chased him and hacked brutally.

The RSS-BJP had alleged that Vinu was killed by CPI(M)-NDF activists. The police on Saturday arrested four persons, all said to be former CPI(M) activists in connection with the murder. The area under the Pavaratty police station was still under prohibitory orders.

Before that, BJP activist Byju (24), son of Ayyappan of Maruthayur near Pavaratty, a taxi driver, was hacked on August 21 morning by a gang of three who had come on a motor cycle while he was filling diesel in the car at a fuel pump in Puvathur. Byju was taken to a private hospital in Thrissur with serious injuries but he succumbed to the injuries.

Byju’s death sparked violence in the area in which three persons suffered hack injuries.
